My Story, by Genghis Khan
Hello! My name is Temüjin, but you might know me by another name: Genghis Khan. My story begins a long, long time ago on the giant, grassy plains of Mongolia. The sky was my roof and the earth was my floor. As a boy, I learned to do many things to become strong. I could ride a horse almost before I could walk! Riding across the open land felt like flying. My family was the most important thing to me, and we all worked together. But life wasn't always easy. When I was still a boy, my father passed away, and other tribes left my family all alone. It was a very hard time, and we had to be very brave to find food and stay safe. My wife, Börte, was even taken away from me, but I promised I would get her back. I said, “I will not give up!” And I didn’t. I rescued her, and that scary time taught me that I had to be strong not just for myself, but for everyone I cared about.
As I grew up, I looked around and saw that all the Mongol tribes were fighting with each other. It made me sad because I knew we were all one people. I had a big idea: what if we all stopped fighting and became one giant, strong family? I thought we could be the greatest people in the world if we worked together. At first, not everyone listened. But I showed them I was a good leader. I made friends and shared my ideas. I told them, “Together, we are like a bundle of arrows that cannot be broken. Alone, we are like a single arrow that snaps easily.” I created fair rules for everyone, so that even the poorest person was treated with respect. Finally, in the year 1206, all the tribes came together for a big meeting. They decided my idea was the right one! To show they trusted me to lead them, they gave me a new, special name: Genghis Khan. It means “ruler of everyone.” I felt so proud that they believed in my dream of a united people.
After we all came together, we created the Mongol Empire, one of the biggest the world has ever seen! It stretched across mountains and deserts. But it wasn't just about being big. I wanted to make life better for my people. I created a super-fast mail system called the Yam. It was like a pony express, where brave riders on fast horses carried messages from one end of the empire to the other in just a few days! I also made the roads safe. Before, it was dangerous for people to travel and sell their goods. But I made sure the paths were protected, so traders could bring beautiful silk and wonderful spices to new places. I was once just a boy named Temüjin from the plains, but I worked hard to bring people together. I passed away many years later, but my story shows that no matter how small you start, you can change the world if you have a big dream and the courage to unite people instead of dividing them.
