A Skunk's Tale
Hello there. My name is Skunk, and I have beautiful, soft fur that is black and white. My stripes are very special. They are like a little warning sign on my back that tells other animals, 'Be careful, I'm special!' I was born in the spring, tucked away in a cozy den underground with all my brothers and sisters. Baby skunks like us are called kits. My family and I are nocturnal, which is a big word that means we love to play and explore at night. When the moon is shining and most everyone else is sleeping, that’s when our adventures begin.
You have probably heard about my most famous feature: my stinky spray. But I want you to know a secret. I don't actually like to use it. It's my superpower for emergencies, and I only use it as a last resort when I feel really, really scared. I always try to give a warning first so that no one gets a smelly surprise. I do a little dance where I stomp my front feet on the ground. Then, I might hiss a little bit. Finally, I will lift my big, fluffy tail high in theair as a final warning sign. If the scary thing still doesn't go away, then I know I have to protect myself. I will turn around and spray an oily liquid that comes from right under my tail. This smelly superpower helps keep me safe from animals who might want to bother me.
Since I am awake at night, that's also my favorite time to look for dinner. I am an omnivore. That's a fancy word that just means I eat both plants and animals, so I am not a picky eater. I have a very sharp nose that helps me smell delicious treats hiding underground. I also have long front claws that are perfect for digging in the dirt. I use them to find some of my favorite foods, like juicy grubs, crunchy beetles, and wriggly worms. When I want something sweet, I love to eat berries right off the bush. Sometimes, if I'm quick, I'll even catch a tiny mouse for my midnight snack.
I know that some people are a little afraid of my smell, but I am actually a very helpful animal to have in your neighborhood. Because I eat so many insects and mice, I help keep gardens and farms healthy and safe for plants to grow. My kind has been helping out in North America for a very long time. In fact, scientists gave my family, the striped skunks, our official scientific name way back in the year 1776. I am a proud and important part of the ecosystem. I do my job every night to help keep nature in balance, making the world a better place for everyone.
